Tyre Law
TREAD DEPTH
To be in accordance with the law, tyres must have a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm in a continuous band around the centre three quarters of the tyre. This is the absolute minimum anything below 1.6 could result in a £2,500 fine and 3 points on your licence per worn tyre. A great way to check your tyres is to use the 20p test, Take a 20 pence coin and put it in to the tread of the tyre If you can’t see the outer rim around the edge of the coin, then more than likly your tyre has a minimum of 3mm tread depth. If you can see the rim then your tyre tread is likely to be less than 3mm and should be checked by a proffesional please see picture below;
WHAT DOES MY PRICE INCLUDE?
All our prices include a new valve, balance, VAT, tyre disposal and a free bead seal for those who are not aware of what a bead seal is, The "bead" is the term for the edge of the tyre that sits on the wheel. On some vehicles especially with alloy wheels the bead's are prone to leak air causing under inflation which can lead to higher fuel cost, tread wearing uneven and reduced vehicle safety the bead seal is put around the bead and keeps the air in the tyre, some company’s charge for this but for us it is all part of the service and included in the price
WHY SHOULD I CHECK MY PRESSURES ON A REGULAR BASIS?
Simple putting the right pressure in your tyre's is most important as over/under inflated tyres can lead to higher fuel cost, tread wearing down quicker / uneven and a higher risk of the tyre failing, we recommend you check your tyre pressures once every two weeks not only to save yourself money but to make sure you are safe on the road look after your tyres and they will look after you. You can check what your tyre pressure should be at https://www.tyre-pressures.com/ and most local petrol stations offer free air for inflating.
TYRE AGEING
Tyres like most things age over time and begin to deteriorate, this is more likely to happen to caravan / trailer tyres but can happen on any vehicle, 9/10 times the reason for the cracking is due to a vehicle being stood still in one place for a long time hence why it is more common with caravan’s and trailers, This is known as the “ozone affect” and simply put as these vehicles are usually left outside the ultraviolet rays from the sun can cause the tyres to crack which then leaves the tyres in a very bad condition and should not be drove on! The caravan club recommend ideally your tyres should be changed every 5 years and should never be used for more than 7 years please see https://www.caravanclub.co.uk/
OTHER REASONS FOR CRACKS
Under inflation is a big one you would be surprised how much longer you can get out of your tyre and how much you can save on fuel when you keep your pressures topped up to the correct pressure, Another reason is some acid based cleaners can cause more damage than good only you will not see this straight away over time cracks will begin to appear resulting in a cracked dangerous tyre we recommend using a non acid based cleaner to keep you tyres nice and clean!
